5 full-day sessions over 5 months

£800 (including materials)

SUNDAYS 10am-4.30pm at the Edinburgh studio, with a 30 minute break for lunch.

course runs 1 day a month for 5 months, inclusive.

 

COURSE:

This course covers the following:

Making a sinamay saucer hat,

Finishings, edgings, and fitting a saucer hat,

Hand blocking a one-piece felt hat (cloche, fedora, bucket hat, boater etc)

Learning manipulation and making trimmings with felt,

Blocking and learning basic techniques with veiling,

Hat finishing techniques – wiring, attaching trimmings, making and fitting headfitting ribbons, attaching elastics and combs.

At the end of the course you should have gained the knowledge detailled above, and have a finished sinamay saucer hat and finished one-piece felt hat.

 

Choose from a wide selection of colours of materials and different types of feathers, to design and create your own unique headwear. You will learn how to manipulate the materials to create different designs.

 

Some basic millinery experience is required (how to use a wooden block and blocking pins).

You will also need some basic hand sewing skills (how to start and finish hand sewing, running stitch, and back stitch).

 

COURSE FEE AND PAYMENT:

Course fee £750 (plus £50 materials, £800 in total)

INSTALLMENTS:

Can be paid in 3 instalments – simply select DEPOSIT from the drop-down menu and put the £300 deposit in the basket and go to the checkout.

You will then be invoiced for the following 2 payments as follows:

Payment 2 of £250 due end January 2025

Payment 3 of £250 due end March 2025.

PAY IN FULL ON BOOKING:

Simply select PAY IN FULL from the drop-down menu and put the full fee of £800 in the basket and go to the checkout.

 

INCLUDED:

Use of all quipment and tuition are included in the cost.

 

ALSO INCLUDED (refreshments):

Activities are fuelled by a selection of teas/coffee, biscuits and cereal bars, which are freely available throughout the workshop.

 

ADDITIONAL:

*any additional materials used will be charged at cost.

* Feel free to bring along any fabrics or trimmings you may want to use, or you can purchase trimmings/feathers at the workshop.  

* Please bring your lunch (there is also a Tesco, and several coffee shops and cafes nearby - so don't worry if this isn't possible).

*Feel free to bring any additional snacks with you.

 

LOCATION:

The sessions are held in The Edinburgh Hat Studio in Gayfield Square, in Edinburgh city centre, a 5 minute walk from the Edinburgh Bus station and a 10 minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley train station. The studio is also well-served by local buses and the tram (Leith Walk - Elm Row stop).

 

SKILL LEVEL:

This course is for people with some basic millinery experience and follows on from Course 1.

If you haven't done Course 1 - WE ARE HAPPY FOR YOU TO JOIN COURSE 2 (without having done Course 1) if you have basic millinery skills (basic blocking sills).

You will also need some basic hand sewing skills (how to start and finish hand sewing, running stitch, and back stitch).

GIFTING WORKSHOPS:

All course places can be given as Christmas presents or gifts - simply request a gift card in the NOTES box and give us the name and email address of the recipient, and a gift card with all the details will be sent to you, to then give to the recipient.

 

5-SESSION INTERMEDIATE BEGINNER'S MILLINERY COURSE 2 - Mar-Jun 2025

  • - All workshops and courses require full payment in advance to confirm your place, or in the case of the Beginner’s Millinery Courses 1 and 2- a deposit must be paid in advance.

    - We understand that sometimes circumstances can change, if you need to change a booking- we will try to be as flexible as we can in rescheduling your booking to another workshop date, subject to availability.

    - Due to the very limited number of places available at our workshops at the studio, cancellations MUST be made a minimum of at least 14 full days in advance of the beginning of the workshop or course, cancellations made more than 14 full days will receive a full refund minus an administratioin fee of £50.

    - If cancellations are made less than 14 full days before the workshop, you will not be entitled to a refund of any monies paid. 

    - Of course, if you're unable to attend, we are happy for you to send a friend or colleague in your place, just let us know their name, phone number and email address in advance of the workshop.

    - No refunds can be given for failed attendance due to holidays, personal sickness or external circumstances, but we are happy to reschedule your booking to another date (*for courses which run over several weeks or months this may not be possible) – should you fail to attend on the new scheduled date – no refund will be given.

    - If we must cancel a class due to unforeseen circumstances that are out with with our control (acts of god, extreme weather conditions, public health situations, acts of terrorism, acts of vandalism, fire, water damage, structural damage to the building, theft) no refunds will be given, however you will be offered an alternative workshop of the same value at a time that suits you. This offer will be valid for 12 months. We cannot accept responsibility for any other costs or expenses you may incur.

    - All guests must make sure that their contact information is correct at the time of booking as we are not be responsible if you do not receive information sent to you as a result of incorrect contact details given at the time of booking.

    **All items made at our workshops are intended for personal use only and not for any kind of commercial use or re-sale.

  • - We look forward to welcoming you to our workshops and would like to draw your attention to the following measure we have in place to keep you and us safe:

    - You will be asked to wash your hands before commencing the workshop, as will Sally.

    - If you, or someone else in your household, or someone you have been in contact with, has any Covid symptoms or has been told to self-isolate - do not attend the workshop. 

    - Each workshop will have a maximum of 3 participants until further notice.

    - Your table and tools will be cleaned before your arrival and we will be asking everyone not to share tools, or touch materials that they do not intend to use. 

    - There will be hand santiser and on your worktable, and you are encouraged to use this regularly.
