FAQs

Q: Are the hats available in different colours?

A: Yes, most of them are, each product has a menu of colours to choose from. We also have access to a large selection of different colours of materials and fabrics and can send you up to 3 samples free-of-charge if required. If you don’t see the colour you want, simply get in touch!

Q: Can you make a hat to match the colour of my outfit?

A: Yes, simply send us a fabric swatch or a square from a paint colour chart, or in fact, anything the right colour to work with. We will search out materials the right colour, and if we cannot find them, we can dye materials to match (there is an additional charge for colour-match dyeing). If it isn’t possible to make a piece in alternative colours, it will say this in the product description – Get in touch to discuss.

Q: Do you have any other designs?

A: Yes we do - what you see online is just a selection of our styles. There are also some sample pieces and one-offs in our READY TO SHIP section.

Q: How long does it take to have a hat made?

A: It depends on the time of year, usually 14 - 21 days, but there may very occasionally be times when it is necessary to allow more time for making your order, such as the height of the wedding and racing season - if we extend our this - it will be flagged at the top of each collection page.

If additional time is needed for unusual fabric requests on Bespoke/Special Orders, laser-cutting or motif-cutting etc, we will notify you as soon as possible with an expected despatch date.

*If you require an item quickly, or for a particular date, phone us before ordering on +44 7931 773410 and we will do our best to help.

We also have a selection of hats available in our READY TO SHIP section.

*Due to the current global situation caused by Covid-19, both making times and shipping times are unavoidably extended, please ask for more details.

Q: Can you make alterations to the designs on the website?

A: Yes we can! We are happy to customise a design for you – just get in touch and we can discuss possibilities with you, and give you a price.

* If we have designed and made a hat specifically as a one-off bespoke piece, and agreed that it will be a one-off with a client, we are happy to make something similar for you, but not exactly the same.

Q: Does it cost extra to have a hat made to order?

A: No, not generally, Sally hand-makes all the hats for stock or orders, and each style is costed according to design and materials. The only additional charge would be a small dyeing charge/sourcing charge if materials the exact colour aren’t available or we are specifically colour-match dyeing for you, please see product description for further details.

*Should you decide at any point that you would like the design altered e.g the addition of more trimming elements - these will be priced according to requirements - payment for any additional materials/work needed must be made before that additional work is done.

Q: How will I know if a style will suit me?

A: We can do a ‘virtual fitting’ for you to help you confirm the right style for you – please get in touch for more details.

Q: How will I know if a style will fit me?

A: We offer different sizes for most of our hats - you need to measure your head first - you can use our handy SIZING GUIDE to help you with this. Then either, choose the correct size from the drop-down menu, or write the size in the NOTES box which is in each listing. For hats fitted with elastics - the elastics on most of our hats can be adjusted - so you can make small adjustments to ensure the perfect for it for you. If you don't tell us what size you want - we will make your hat a standard size 22.5 inches/57cm.

Q: What do you mean by "Wearer's Left" and "Wearer's Right" for Hat Position or Hat Trimming Position?

A: Raise your right hand, really, raise it in the air - this is the "Wearer's Right" this means that the base of the hat will sit on this side of your head.

For full head hats or hats with level brims, when you choose "Trim Position" it means that the trimming on the hat will sit on the relevant side as mentioned above.

Q: Do you have a shop I can visit?

A: We have studio shop/showroom where you can shop from the collections and the bridal collection, or place an order to have a hat or headpiece made through our BESPOKE SERVICE.

Q: What are your opening hours?

A: We work by appointment only, to ensure every client has undivided attention, privacy, and time to choose the perfect hat. Appointments are available Monday - Saturday, between 9am - 6.30pm (and Sundays by special arrangement only)

Q: Where are you based?

A: We are based in central Edinburgh, Scotland, UK – a ten minute taxi ride from Waverley Station.

Q: Is your building accessible for wheelchair users and people with mobility issues?

A: Yes it is, we have a car park with low ramp to the front door, a large lift, disabled accessible toilets, and the studio is suitable for wheelchair users.

Q: I'm vegan, is it possible to have a hat made from materials made from plants?

A: Yes it is - all of the different types of straw and sinamay we use are made from plant fibres, and we can use linen and cotton instead of silk for making additional trimmings. If you are happy wearing wool, all of our winter hats can be made from woolfelt. Just let us know your preferences before, or at the time of order.
