10am-4.30pm at the studio, with a 30 minute break for lunch.

course runs 1 day a month for 5 months, inclusive.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
Making pillboxes from sinamay straw,
Making headpieces and fascinators on a headband,
Learning techniques with sinamay and crin.
Learning basic techniques with feathers to make trimmings and headpieces,
Hat finishing techniques – wiring, attaching trimmings, making and fitting headfitting ribbons, attaching elastics and combs.
At the end of the course you should have gained the knowledge detailled above, and have 2 finished sinamay pillbox hats and 2 fascinator/headpieces (dependent on each indvidual).
SKILL LEVEL:
Beginners: You don't need any previous experience.
Hand sewing - you should know how to running stitch, slip stitch, and skills needed to sew on a button.
Choose from a wide selection of colours of materials and different types of feathers, to design and create your own unique headwear. You will learn how to manipulate the materials to create different designs.
COURSE FEE AND PAYMENT:
Course fee £750.
INSTALLMENTS:
Can be paid in 3 instalments – simply select DEPOSIT from the drop-down menu and put the £250 deposit in the basket and go to the checkout.
You will then be invoiced for the following 2 payments as follows:
Payment 2 of £250 due mid September 2026.
Payment 3 of £250 due early November 2026.
PAY IN FULL ON BOOKING:
Simply select PAY IN FULL from the drop-down menu and put the full fee of £750 in the basket and go to the checkout.
INCLUDED:
Use of all equipment and tuition are included in the cost.
ALSO INCLUDED (refreshments):
Activities are fuelled by a selection of teas/coffee, biscuits and cereal bars, which are freely available throughout the workshop.
ADDITIONAL:
*any additional materials used will be charged at cost.
* Feel free to bring along any fabrics or trimmings you may want to use, or you can purchase trimmings/feathers at the workshop.
* Please bring your lunch (there is also a Tesco, and several coffee shops and cafes nearby - so don't worry if this isn't possible).
*Feel free to bring any additional snacks with you.
LOCATION:
The sessions are held in The Edinburgh Hat Studio in Gayfield Square, in Edinburgh city centre, a 5 minute walk from the Edinburgh Bus station and a 10 minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley train station. The studio is also well-served by local buses and the tram (Leith Walk - Elm Row stop).
FOLLOW-ON COURSES:
Course 2 - Course 6 are run according to demand and available to book online.
